From a- "on" + Old English baft, baften, biaften, Anglo Saxon beæftan; be "by" + æftan "behind". See After, Aft, By

Preposition

  1. (nautical): Behind; toward the stern relative to some other object or position; as, abaft the wheelhouse.

Phrases

  • Abaft the beam: to one side of the vessel and behind an imaginary line drawn across the centre of a ship. Or, more precisely: taking dead ahead as bearing 0° and dead astern as bearing 180°, an object which is abaft the beam bears greater than 90°.
