Greek kakos: bad + daimon: spirit. κακοδαιμων from κακος ‘bad’ + δαιμων ‘genius, divinity’.

1. an evil or malevolent spirit as opposed to agathodemon (a good spirit). Cacodaemons are shape shifters. There are apparently 1024 of them.
2. The twelfth astrological House, from which only evil prognostics are alleged to proceed.
3. (Obsolete). A nightmare.
