Noun

database (plural databases); (older spellings: data base, data-base)

  1. A collection of (usually) organized information in a regular structure, usually but not necessarily in a machine-readable format accessed by a computer. E.G. "I have a database of all my contacts in my filoFAX."
  2. A software program for storing, retrieving and manipulating a database(1). E.G. "Which database do you use, MySql or Access?"
  3. A combination of (1) and (2).
