From Dutch duitsch (meaning German); or from German deutsch, (originally popular, national), OD. dietsc, Middle High German diutsch, tiutsch, Old High German diutisk, from diot, diota, (meaning a people, a nation); akin to Anglo-Saxon peód, Old Saxon thiod, thioda, Gothic þiuda; compare with Lithuanian tauta people, Old Irish tuath people, Oscan touto. The English have applied the name especially to the Germanic people living nearest them, the Hollanders. See Derrick, Teutonic.
