Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *ekwos, horse. Originally palatal, the k became a gutteral in the centum languages, of which Latin is one. In the segmentation, *ekw-o-, the American Heritage Dictionary relates *ekw- to the adjective, *oku-, swift. A horse is thus the swift one, which fits the circumstance of Indo-European mobility.
