Common Germanic, from Indo-European *oktō(u)- ‘eight’. Cognate with Old High German ahto (German acht), Old Saxon ahto (Dutch acht), Old Norse átta (Swedish åtta), Gothic 𐌰𐌷𐍄𐌰𐌿; and, outside the Germanic languages, with Sanskrit अष्ट, Greek ὀκτώ, Latin octo, Albanian tetë, Old Irish ocht (Irish hocht), Old Slavic osm’ (Russian восемь).
