From Germanic *austa- (adverb), from Indo-European *austro-, *austero- âeasternâ. Cognate with Old Frisian Äst, Old Saxon ost (Dutch oost), Old High German Åst (German ost). The IE root is also the source of Avestan uÅ¡astara- âeasternâ, Latin auster âsoutherlyâ, Latvian austrumi âeasterlyâ, Old Church Slavonic заÑÑÑÑа.
