From Germanic *austa- (adverb), from Indo-European *austro-, *austero- ‘eastern’. Cognate with Old Frisian āst, Old Saxon ost (Dutch oost), Old High German ōst (German ost). The IE root is also the source of Avestan ušastara- ‘eastern’, Latin auster ‘southerly’, Latvian austrumi ‘easterly’, Old Church Slavonic заустра.
