Etymology

Mediaeval Latin, from Arabic قالنجان (qālanjān) (cognate with Persian قولنجان (kūlinjān), Sanskrit कुलञ्जन), perhaps from Chinese 高良薑 (gāoliángjiāng), from 高良 (gāoliáng) (a district in China) + 薑 (jiāng) ‘ginger’.
