Cognate with Old Frisian garda, Old Saxon gardo (Dutch gaard), Old High German gart (German Garten), Old Norse garðr (Swedish gård), Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍂𐌳𐌰, 𐌲𐌰𐍂𐌳𐍃. The IE root is also the source of Slavic *gordъ (Old Church Slavonic градъ, Russian город ‘town’), Albanian gardh ‘fence’.
