Etymology 1
Medieval Latin geldum, Old English gield, "payment", "tribute". Confer Dutch geld, "money", German Geld, "money", Old Norse giald, "payment", Gothic gild, "tribute". Also confer "yield". Geld is also written gelt, or gild, and as such found in "Danegelt", and "wergild".
