Etymology

From ġe- + Germanic *mang-, from Indo-European *menk- ‘knead’. Cognate with Old Saxon gimang. The IE root is also the source of Slavic *mekъkъ (Old Church Slavonic мѫка, Russian мука), Baltic *minki- (Lithuanian minkiti).
