Etymology

From an early form haebuc, from Germanic *habokaz, from Indo-European *kep- ‘seize’. Cognate with Old Frisian havek (Frisian hauk), Old Saxon hauk (Dutch havik), Old High German habuh (German Habicht), Old Norse haukr (Swedish hök). The word is related to a Slavic word for a bird of prey (Russian кобец, Polish kobuz).
