Etymology
From an early form haebuc, from Germanic *habokaz, from Indo-European *kep- âseizeâ. Cognate with Old Frisian havek (Frisian hauk), Old Saxon hauk (Dutch havik), Old High German habuh (German Habicht), Old Norse haukr (Swedish hök). The word is related to a Slavic word for a bird of prey (Russian кобеÑ, Polish kobuz).
