Etymology

Anglo-Saxon healf, half ('half'); as a noun, 'half', 'side', 'part'; akin to Old Saxon, Old Friesian, and Dutch half, German halb, Swedish half, Danish halv, Icelandic hālfr and Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌻𐌱𐍃 (halbs). Compare halve, behalf.
