Etymology

Essentially a joke: in the local dialect, Kann isch ne halve han? means "Can i get a half one (sandwich)". Foreigners interpreted this as Halve Hahn, "half a rooster". Nowadays, it's often written like this on the menu of rustical restaurants in Cologne.
