Etymology

Germanic *imbiaz, perhaps from Indo-European a(m)pi-. Cognate with Middle Dutch imme (Dutch imker ‘beekeeper’), Old High German imbi (German Imme). (The proposed Indo-European root is also the source of Greek εμπίς, Latin apis.)
