Etymology
Latin Johannes, New Testament Greek Ιωάννης (Iōánnēs), contraction from Hebrew יוֹחָנָן (Jōħānān, Johanan perheaps from a former Jəhôħānān), meaning "God is gracious"; of great importance to early Christianity (in the names of the Biblical characters John the Baptist, John the Apostle, and John the Evangelist).
