Etymology
Literally, "Son of John". Exerpted from the article on John:
Latin Johannes, New Testament Greek ÎÏÎ¬Î½Î½Î·Ï (IÅánnÄs), contraction from Hebrew ××Ö¹×Ö¸× Ö¸× (JÅħÄnÄn, Johanan perheaps from a former JÉhôħÄnÄn), meaning "God is gracious"; of great importance to early Christianity (in the names of the Biblical characters John the Baptist, John the Apostle, and John the Evangelist).
The literal meaning of the name Johnson, is "Son of God is gracious", or "Son of God is merciful". John is derived from the original Greek ÎÏάννηÏ, which is further derived from the Hebrew word YôḥÄnÄn (which means "God is merciful"). For a more complete etymology of John, see the Wiktionary definition of John, or the Wikipedia article on John (name).
