- Gaelic Mac (son of) + Arthur (Celtic - noble, follower of Thor 2) "Strong man," from Ar, meaning "man" and thor meaning "strong." 3) "Bear man, hero, or man of strength," from the Welsh arth, meaning "bear" and ur an ending meaning "man.").

Mac Arthur or MacArthur
- A surname of Scottish origin. The Clan MacArthur is one of the oldest of Argyll and its age is referred to in the proverb, "There is nothing older, unless the hills, MacArthur and the devil." Today it is a sept of the Clan Campbell.
