Etymology

From Ancient Greek Μακεδονία (Makedonia) "highland", from μακεδνός (makednos), "high, tall", from Doric Greek μάκος (makos), "height, length"; in Ionic Greek: μήκος (mekos). In Greek mythology, Μακεδονία (Makedonia) was named after Μακεδών (Makedon), the patriarch of the Macedonians.
