Etymology
From Ancient Greek Îακεδονία (Makedonia) "highland", from μακεδνÏÏ (makednos), "high, tall", from Doric Greek Î¼Î¬ÎºÎ¿Ï (makos), "height, length"; in Ionic Greek: Î¼Î®ÎºÎ¿Ï (mekos). In Greek mythology, Îακεδονία (Makedonia) was named after ÎακεδÏν (Makedon), the patriarch of the Macedonians.
