Etymology

Middle English mayde, maide, from Old English mægþ, mægden, from common Germanic *magadi(n), derived from Proto-Indo-European *magh(u)- "young person". Near cognates include Dutch meid, maagd, German Magd, and Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐌲𐌰𐌸𐍃 (magaþs).
