Etymology

Prefix "palaeo-" (from greek 'palaios'= "old") and "tropical" (from greek 'tropikos', referring to where the length of the day equals that of the night)

Adjective

  1. Occurring in tropical Africa and Asia, i.e. the tropics of "the old world". Used in biology, pertaining to area of geographical occurrence.
