Etymology

From Ancient Greek Πανικός (Panikos) "of or related to god Pan". From an ancient Greek legend: When the Persians were attacking Greece, god Pan spread an inexplicable sense of great fear to the Persians, which made them run away. Since then the word πανικός (panikos) has the meaning of a great, irrational fear, πανικός φόβος (panikos fovos) "panic fear".
