Etymology
From Ancient Greek ΠανικÏÏ (Panikos) "of or related to god Pan". From an ancient Greek legend: When the Persians were attacking Greece, god Pan spread an inexplicable sense of great fear to the Persians, which made them run away. Since then the word ÏανικÏÏ (panikos) has the meaning of a great, irrational fear, ÏανικÏÏ ÏÏÎ²Î¿Ï (panikos fovos) "panic fear".
