Old English cwēn ‘woman, queen’. Cognate with quean.

  1. A female monarch. Ex: Queen Victoria
  2. The wife of a king. Ex: Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother
  3. (chess) Piece able to move both horizontally and diagonally any number of spaces; most powerful piece.
  4. (playing_cards) Playing card with picture of queen on its face, 12th card in a given suit.
  5. A powerful or forceful female person.
  6. Slang. A male homosexual who is particularly effeminate. See Drag queen.
  7. A reproductive female animal in a hive, such as an ant, bee, termite or wasp
  8. An adult female cat. See tom.
