Noun
racaille f.
scum is a mistranslation which I believe dates from the time it was used by Nicolas Sarkozy about the banlieusards. It is better translated as "rabble", and come from the same route as "rascal".
it is today used in France relating to a gangster- similar to that of a 'chav'.
