Etymology
From Germanic *Å«wwalÅn, originally a diminutive of *Å«wwÅn âowlâ (Old High German hÅ«wo, Old Saxon hÅ«o), probably a word imitative of the animal's call. Cognate with Middle Low German Å«le (Dutch uil), Old Norse ugla. A Germanic variant *Å«wwilÅn was the source of Old High German Å«wila (German Eule).
