From Germanic *ūwwalōn, originally a diminutive of *ūwwōn ‘owl’ (Old High German hūwo, Old Saxon hūo), probably a word imitative of the animal's call. Cognate with Middle Low German ūle (Dutch uil), Old Norse ugla. A Germanic variant *ūwwilōn was the source of Old High German ūwila (German Eule).
