Noun
underline or _
- When used beneath a letter or word in typewriting, it indicates that the object is to be printed in italic. Typing the phrase "I went to see the movie The Matrix last week," would indicate one should print it as "I went to see the movie The Matrix last week."
- In some computer programming languages, the underline serves as an additional character to use in an identifier in addition to a digit or a letter of the alphabet.
- In some contexts in computer messaging, the underline is used to substitute for a space or blank.
