Etymology
From Germanic *wadan, from Indo-European *wadh-, *wedh-. Cognate with Old Frisian wada, Middle Dutch wÄden (Dutch waden), Old High German watan (German waten), Old Norse vaða (Swedish vada). The IE root is also the source of Latin vadere âgoâ, vadum âfordâ.
