  1. Request for confirmation that converts into a question an affirmative sentence with a be verb or in past progressive tense. Expects agreement in a "yes" answer.
    “Grandpa was doing well before the fall, wasn't he?”
    “The fireworks were so beautiful this year, weren't they?”
    “We were truly in love, were we not?”

Usage notes

As a tag, always used with an object pronoun substituting for the subject. Tense and person distinguish among the be forms: is, am, are, was, and were. When immediately followed by "not", the contraction is used.
