Etymology

Old English wæter < Proto-Germanic *watraz < Proto-Indo-European inanimate heteroclitic noun *wódr (genitive *wedn-ós "of water") < PIE verb root *wed-. Cognates include wet, whiskey, Greek ὕδωρ (hýdōr < *udôr, variant of *wodr-), Latin unda "wave", Gaelic uisce, Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐍄𐍉 (wato), German Wasser, Lithuanian vanduo, and Russian вода (vodá). PIE also had animate synonyms, *h2ekweh2 and *h2ep-, which are the sources of Latin aqua and Persian آب (âb) respectively.
