From Germanic *waroþō, an extension of a stem-verb *wāro- ‘be on guard’ (OE warian). Cognate with Old High German warta ‘watch’ (German Warte ‘watchtower’), Old Saxon warda (Middle Dutch warde), Old Norse varða ‘cairn’.
