Etymology

From Germanic *umbi, from Indo-European *ambhi ‘around’. Cognate with Old Saxon umbi (Dutch om), Old High German umbi (German um), Old Norse umb (Swedish om). The IE root is also the source of Latin ambi-, Greek ἀμφί, Old Irish imb-.
